West Virginia License Plate Lookup /Inspection for Tags Renewal

Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in West Virginia?

Yes, a routine safety inspection every twenty-four months is required to renew your vehicle tags in West Virginia. When a vehicle passes inspection, a sticker valid for twenty-four months is placed on the inside of the windshield. West Virginia does not require emissions testing for registration renewal.

West Virginia issues license plates and registration cards when a vehicle is registered. After every successful renewal, registration stickers are issued for display on license plates to indicate the expiration month and year.

Exemptions and Special Circumstances

West Virginia exempts the following vehicles from the mandated routine safety inspection:

  • Antique motor vehicles that are at least 25 years old may qualify for special registration classifications
  • Farm trucks used exclusively for the transportation of farm products and supplies by a farmer may qualify for farm use exemptions
  • Vehicles with valid inspection stickers from Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming are recognized in West Virginia until the out-of-state sticker expires
